Sustainable and Intelligent Design of Machines and Mechanical Systems

COURSE CONTENT

The course content focuses on the integrated design of mechanical systems based on principles of sustainability, circularity, and intelligent technologies, covering the systematic formulation of design problems, the multi-criteria evaluation of solutions, and the development of modern design approaches.

  • Principles of sustainable and intelligent design of mechanical systems
  • Formulation and modeling of design problems involving multiple criteria
  • Multi-criteria evaluation and selection of design solutions
  • Circularity, and environmental and social assessment in design
  • Integration of sensors, data, and intelligent algorithms
  • Development of integrated design solutions using modern tools

• Comprehensive case study and knowledge synthesis

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course is elective and is offered to all sectors during the 9th semester of studies.

Course Objectives:

The course addresses contemporary principles of sustainable and intelligent design of machines and mechanical systems, with emphasis on life-cycle thinking, multi-criteria decision-making, and the integration of intelligent technologies (sensors, data, algorithms).

Its aim is to develop the ability to design integrated mechanical systems that simultaneously optimize technical performance, cost, environmental and social impacts, as well as resource circularity.

Particular emphasis is placed on the use of data, intelligent algorithms, and multi-criteria methods to support well-documented design decisions.

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • utilize data and computational tools to support well-documented design decisions
  • design not only for strength and functionality, but also with consideration of life cycle and sustainability
  • integrate sensors, data, and intelligence into machines
  • justify design choices using multi-criteria reasoning
  • approach the machine as a system rather than as an isolated component

The proposed course is smoothly integrated into the existing core of design-oriented courses and aligns with the logic of progressive deepening in the design process. The course is positioned chronologically after the courses “Mechanical Measurements,” “Machine Elements I,” and “Machine Elements II,” constituting a more advanced and integrative stage of the educational pathway, operating in parallel with and complementing the course “Introduction to Design Theory.
