Keynote Presentation: Robust Vibration Based Structural Health Monitoring: Methods, Applications, and Perspectives
Abstract: The presentation addresses the problem of random vibration based Structural Health Monitoring. Its various facets and versions, the underlying assumptions, and the subproblems of damage detection, characterization/localization, and damage level estimation are discussed. The focus is on powerful data-based Statistical Time Series (STS) type methods, with their basic principles, pros and cons, and main approaches concisely outlined. Particular attention is paid to crucial and persistent challenges, including: (I) Resorting on low bandwidth natural random excitation which is typically non-measurable; (II) achieving effective diagnosis via a minimal number of sensors; (III) maintaining monitoring performance under varying Environmental and Operational Conditions (EOCs) and Uncertainty, including population uncertainty; (IV) diagnosing minor / incipient damage; (V) estimating damage evolution; (VI) achieving accurate localization; (VII) ensuring SHM system reliability via sensor monitoring. Advances in methods for overcoming these challenges are discussed within the Multiple Model, Hyper-Sphere, and Functional Model based frameworks for various engineering applications involving composite and metallic structures. The presentation concludes with an overview of current achievements, limitations, and perspectives. |
